Highlights and summary of the fourth matchday of the UEFA Nations League: Spain through to the quarter-finals | UEFA Nations League

Defending champions Spain are through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League after a 3-0 win on matchday four, but Portugal missed the chance to join them as they were held to a 0-0 draw in Glasgow.

Tuesday

Spain – Serbia 3-0

Aymeric Laporte's early header put the hosts under control, with Mikel Merino nodding against the post before half-time. Captain Álvaro Morata fired a penalty over the bar shortly after half-time, but soon doubled the lead with a crisp finish after some fine passing play. Serbia were reduced to ten players when Strahinja Pavlović was sent off for a foul, and from the resulting free kick Álex Baena scored a wonderful third goal.

Scotland – Portugal 0-0

Scotland picked up their first point, a goalless draw, meaning unbeaten Portugal are not yet mathematically certain of reaching the last eight. Scott McTominay and Ryan Christie called Diogo Costa into action in the first half, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Francisco Conceição fired over after the break. Craig Gordon then denied Bruno Fernandes three minutes from time to deny the visitors a fourth win in a row.

Poland – Croatia 3:3

Poland took an early lead through Piotr Zieliński, but Croatia responded with a volley from Borna Sosa before Petar Sučić and Martin Baturina gave them a 3-1 lead. The energetic Nicola Zalewski got Poland's hopes back on track with a precise finish just before half-time, and substitute Robert Lewandowski then set up Sebastian Szymański's equaliser. However, after Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković was sent off in the 76th minute, the hosts were unable to force their lead.

Switzerland – Denmark 2:2

The Swiss got their first point in a turbulent draw. Remo Freuler gave them the lead with a powerful shot in the first half, but Denmark equalized within two minutes through first-time starter Gustav Isaksen. Shortly before the break, Zeki Amdouni restored the hosts' lead with a penalty, but Christian Eriksen scored again to equalize the visitors.

  • After winning their last three home games 2-0, Northern Ireland raised the bar with a 5-0 win over Bulgaria, with 21-year-old Isaac Price scoring his first career hat-trick. They were the biggest wins of all time: 5-0 against Cyprus in 1971 and the Faroe Islands in 1991.
  • Romania are the only team in League C with a 100 percent record after Mircea Lucescu's men recovered from an early penalty to win 2-1 in Lithuania. Denis Drăguş scored the decisive goal in the second half.
  • Romania and Kosovo are certain to be the top two in Group C2 after Tuesday's results. Captain Amir Rrahmani, Ermal Krasniqi and Emir Sahiti scored in Kosovo's 3-0 win over Cyprus, leaving the gap between second and third places to six points.

Monday

Germany – Netherlands 1-0

Debutant Jamie Leweling's finish allowed Germany to secure a place in the quarter-finals as one of the top two teams in Group A3 after the 23-year-old caught a loose ball from a corner just after the hour mark. Maximilian Mittelstädt and Tim Kleindienst tested Bart Verbruggen in the first half, and Ronald Koeman's visitors came close twice in the closing stages.

Belgium – France 1:2

Randal Kolo Muani scored twice in Brussels as Les Bleus extended their winning streak against Belgium to seven competitive games. After Youri Tielemans sent a penalty over the crossbar in the 23rd minute, Kolo Muani scored from the spot twelve minutes later. Loïs Openda headed the equalizer in first-half stoppage time, but France's number 12 scored the winner in the 62nd minute before Aurélien Tchouameni was sent off for Les Bleus with 14 minutes remaining.

Italy 4:1 Israel

Omri Glazer made some great saves in the first half, but when Mateo Retegui scored a penalty in the 41st minute, the Azzurri were unstoppable. Giovanni Di Lorenzo headed the Azzurri's second goal and while Abu Fani responded straight away from a corner, Italy responded forcefully, with Davide Frattesi and Di Lorenzo hitting fine low throws to ensure the Azzurri remained in control at the top of Group A2.

Bosnia and Herzegovina 0-2 Hungary

Dominik Szoboszlai scored two goals to give Hungary its first win of the season. The hosts took an early lead in Zenica, but Hungary's captain put the visitors ahead with a low shot eight minutes before half-time. Five minutes after the restart he doubled their lead by coolly converting a penalty after substitute Nail Omerović was penalized for a foul in the box.

  • Türkiye trailed by a goal within three minutes and also missed a penalty in Iceland, but still emerged victorious away from home when Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in the closing stages to turn a 2-2 draw into a 4-2 made victory.
  • Wales remain unbeaten in four games under new coach Craig Bellamy after Harry Wilson's penalty gave them a 1-0 win over Montenegro, but the Dragons are still two points behind Türkiye at the top of Group B4.
  • The Czech Republic is one point clear at the top of Group B1 after a 1-1 draw against Ukraine, while the Albanians, who are also taking part in UEFA EURO 2024, Albania and Georgia after the Albanians' 1-0 win in Tbilisi , Kristjan Asllani, charged to hit the winner.

Finland – England 1:3

England remain just three points behind leaders Greece after their win in Helsinki. They took the lead in the 18th minute when Jack Grealish scored from a brilliant pass from Angel Gomes. Finland could have equalized when Fredrik Jensen shot over just after half-time, but Trent Alexander-Arnold curled a superb free-kick in the 74th minute before Declan Rice fired in ten minutes later. Arttu Hoskonen headed the consolation goal for the hosts.

  • After beating England at Wembley on Thursday night, Greece defended their three-point lead at the top of Group B2 with a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland, with Tasos Bakasetas scoring shortly after half-time and Petros Mantalos struck late. Ivan Jovanović's team has a maximum of 12 points after four games.
  • Austria were the big winners on Sunday evening as they beat Norway 5-1 after a 4-0 win against Kazakhstan. Marko Arnautović scored his first two goals in Linz (the second a penalty), Philipp Lienhart, Stefan Posch and Michael Gregoritsch scored the goals after the break.
  • North Macedonia won 2-0 in Armenia and moved to the top of Group C4 with a six-point lead. Bojan Miovski and Isnik Alimi scored the goals in the final 20 minutes in Yerevan. Blagoja Milevski's team has won the last three games without conceding a goal.
