Guardians on Yankees score, live updates: Cleveland tries to avoid a 2-0 deficit in ALCS Game 2

The New York Yankees sprinted to a 1-0 lead in the ALCS with a 5-2 win in Game 1 in the Bronx, powered by home runs from Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto and a breakout performance from Carlos Rodón.

New York will look to tighten its grip on the series in Game 2 on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium with ace Gerrit Cole on the mound. Cole made two starts in the ALDS against the Royals – with the Yankees winning both games – and is 1-0 heading into Game 2 of the American League Championship Series this postseason, with a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings with eight strikeouts and two Walks.

Cleveland will counter with Tanner Bibee. He logged 8 2/3 innings in two starts in these playoffs – both of which were Guardians wins over the Tigers in their ALDS – and struck out nine while walking three. Brayan Rocchio had two of Cleveland's six hits in Game 1, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, but he will need more help from the middle of Cleveland's lineup. José Ramírez, Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor — Cleveland's 3-4-5 hitter — combined to go 0-for-11 with a walk and five strikeouts in Game 1.

Live7 updates

  • Guards limit damage to 1 Yankees attack first

The Yankees had runners on first and second and a run on the board before the Guardians recorded their first out of the game. But Tanner Bibee got out of trouble with strikeouts from Austin Wells and Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a nice play in foul territory from right fielder Will Brennan on a fly ball from Giancarlo Stanton to limit the damage to one run.

The Yankees lead 1-0 after one inning.

  • A costly mistake puts the Yankees on the field early

The Yankees are on board thanks to a very unfortunate infield error. Gleyber Torres doubled and Juan Soto doubled to lead off the bottom of the first with runners on the corners and no outs. Cleveland then appeared to have its first out in the bag with an infield popup from Aaron Judge.

But shortstop Brayan Rocchio misplayed the ball and watched it bounce off his glove and onto the turf. The error allowed Judge to reach safely and score for Torres from third.

  • Gerrit Cole got off to a strong start. A 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout from Kyle Manzardo eliminated the top of the Guardians line.

  • We're just moments away from first pitch. Gerrit Cole warms up on the mound for the Yankees.

  • The Guardians cut injured P Alex Cobb from the postseason roster

It's not relevant to Game 2, but the Guardians have left starting pitcher Alex Cobb off their postseason roster because of a back strain. He will be replaced by Ben Lively, who posted a 13-10 regular season record with a 3.81 ERA and 1.245 WHIP in 29 starts.

The 37-year-old Cobb was limited to three appearances in the regular season due to injury. He made two postseason starts in Monday's Game 1 loss to the Yankees, but lasted only 2 2/3 innings before leaving the game due to hip strain and back spasm. Now his season is over.

  • Gerrit Cole starts for the Yankees

Six-time All-Star and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole will start for the Yankees. Cole posted a 3.41 ERA and a 1.126 WHIP with 99 strikeouts in 95 innings of a regular season limited by injury.
