The 5 Best New Movies to Stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and More (October 15-21)

This week, lots of new movies are landing on the top streaming services including Netflix, Prime Video, Max and more, giving subscribers something new to watch.

However, I would argue that the highlight of the week is the streaming debut of Alien: Romulus. Yes, I'm extremely biased here as the Alien series is my favorite movie series, but even putting my personal preferences aside, this legacy sequel is the perfect watch as we prepare for Halloween. But if you like something a little more family-friendly, you should definitely try “The Wild Robot”.

When it hit theaters in August, I approached Alien: Romulus with a mix of excitement and skepticism. As an “Alien” superfan, I've been annoyed by lackluster entries in the franchise before (looking at you, “Alien Covenant”), but “Romulus” was exactly what I wanted from a new “Alien” film this year I wanted 2024. Yes, it shamelessly steals elements from previous Alien flicks, but it makes the xenomorph scary again, full of heartbreaking tension and supported by two fantastic performances from Cailee Spaeny and David Johnson.

In this sci-fi horror somewhere between “Alien” and “Aliens”, a group of young space miners encounter the deadliest creature in the universe while searching for valuable materials in a supposedly abandoned space station. In their search for an escape route, they also discover the station's true purpose and must confront the eponymous creature. Equal parts frightening and thrilling, Alien: Romulus is the best Alien film in decades.

“The Wild Robot” (PVOD)

The Wild Robot is already considered one of the best animated films of the year and currently has a truly impressive score of 98% Rotten tomatoes Both critics and viewers praise this sci-fi adventure for its heartfelt story and lovable characters. Unfortunately, its critical acclaim didn't quite translate into box office success, and from a financial perspective the film lags well behind “Inside Out 2” and “Despicable Me 4.” Hopefully, its launch on PVOD platforms will help increase viewership.

In this Dreamworks film, a robot named Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong'o) is washed up on an uninhabited island after a shipwreck. The metallic bot adapts to his new, untamed environment, becoming a protector of the island's native wildlife and developing a parental bond with an orphaned goose. Based on the best-selling novel by Peter Brown, The Wild Robot is a delightful film that will tug at your heartstrings and lift your spirits.

Fans of 1988's “Twins,” which paired Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito to great comedic effect as long-lost siblings, may feel a twinge of familiarity about Prime Video's new film “Brothers.” In this comedy, Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage play brothers, and it looks like there's a lot of humor derived from their dissimilar physical statures. Whether this joke will be enough to carry you through the entire film remains to be seen.

Moke (Brolin) and Jady Munger (Dinklage) are twin brothers who act as criminal doppelgangers. As they embark on an epic cross-country road trip, they face legal troubles, family drama and numerous shootings. But when Moke tells Jady he wants to reform and leave her life of crime behind, the two must resolve their differences before their brotherly bond is broken forever. This action comedy also stars Brandan Fraser and Glenn Close.

“Woman of the Hour” (Netflix)

I've been eagerly awaiting Woman of the Hour for a while and this week it's finally coming to Netflix. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023, the film has been slowly turning heads over the past year and is likely to shock and captivate Netflix subscribers. This crime thriller is Anna Kendrick's directorial debut and is based on a true story so incredible you'd swear it was fantasy.

Set in 1970s Los Angeles, Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress who agrees to appear on the hit dating show “The Dating Game” to increase her profile and maybe get a date with a cute guy. But while recording the episode, she encounters a psychopathic murderer, Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto), who has already murdered several women. Rodney's bizarre decision to appear on live television earned him the name “The Dating Game Killer” when he was finally caught.

'Maxxxine' (Max)

“Maxxxine” marks the conclusion of Ti West’s “X” trilogy and follows on from various storylines from 2022’s “X” and “Pearl.” At least I recommend having seen the former before watching — “Maxxxine” is a direct sequel to “X” — But if you really want to see the whole picture, you should watch the entire trilogy this spooky season. Although this final chapter is largely considered the weakest of the trio, it still oozes West's trademark flair and Mia Goth once again impressively plays the lead role.

After the events of “X,” Maxine Minx (Goth) finally gets the chance to become a superstar when she is cast in an upcoming horror film. But a mysterious murderer is stalking the streets of LA in the 80s, and the targets of these murders are young actresses. As the murders continue, Maxine fears that she could be next, but most of all she worries that her dark past will come to light. Favoring style over substance, “Maxxxine” is well-crafted but a little hollow.
