Vikings trade Cam Akers amid Aaron Jones injury issue

Vikings trade Cam Akers amid Aaron Jones injury issue

Cam Akers is heading to Minnesota.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Viking acquired the running back from the Texans on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional sixth- and seventh-round pick in 2026.

The move comes as Vikings starting ball carrier Aaron Jones is dealing with a hip injury.

Jones left Minnesota's win over the Jets in Week 5 and was described as “week to week” by head coach Kevin O'Connell during the team's bye week.

Pelissero reported that Akers' signing reflects “no long-term concerns” about Jones and that the veteran starter could play against the Lions on Sunday.

Ty Chandler struggled as the primary running back in Jones' place after leaving the game against the Jets, rushing for just 30 yards on 14 carries.

The 25-year-old Akers has had some success in O'Connell's offensive program in the past.

He played under him when O'Connell was the Rams' offensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021, and then again last season when the Vikings acquired Akers in another midseason trade.

After signing a one-year deal with the Texans in the offseason, Akers appeared in five games for Houston this season, rushing for 147 yards on 40 carries and one touchdown.

He started two games in place of the injured Joe Mixon and ran for a combined 95 yards in both games.

In five NFL seasons, Akers has rushed for 1,728 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Vikings look to remain undefeated against the division rival Lions on Sunday in Minnesota.

Minnesota is one of two undefeated teams along with the Chiefs, upsetting the 49ers, Texans and Packers en route to their perfect record.
