Sports Mole previews Wednesday's World Cup Qualifier – South America between Brazil and Peru, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Just days after a late win that eased some of the pressure on the manager Dorival Junior, Brazil will be welcome Peru to Brasilia in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.

A last-gasp win in Chile kept Brazil in the automatic qualification spots, while Peru moved out of the bottom of the group with its first win last week.

Confidence in Botafogo's in-form players was a real masterstroke from Brazil head coach Dorival last week in the away game in Chile, where the Selecao claimed a crucial victory and will look to continue their fantastic track record of reaching every single World Cup final.

At the start of the break, Brazil was only missing a bad result slip into a crisisbut that was averted thanks Luiz Henrique's late winner in the Chilean capital on Thursday.

Brazil fell behind early but it was another Botafogo man. Igor Jesuswho scored the equalizer before his teammate scored the decisive goal in the 89th minute.

The three points extended the streak to 17 wins in 20 games against Chile, but the nations around them also picked up points on matchday nine, meaning Brazil is still just two points behind the automatic qualification places.

Three wins in ten competitive games is almost a rarity for Brazil and the reason why Dorival's job is currently in danger.

Another home win against one of South America's weakest nations at the moment is a must, and a run of five straight wins against Peru should give the hosts plenty of confidence, even if their recent results suggest otherwise.

At the start of the October window, Peru was the only remaining CONMEBOL nation yet to win in qualifying. However, they made amends with a surprise win over Uruguay on Friday, proving once again that there is no country in South America that is easy to visit.

It was Peru's first competitive win in two years, since the final game of the last World Cup qualifiers, with La Blanquirroja this time going winless in their first eight games and picking up just one point in three group games at the Copa America in the summer.

It looked too Jorge FossatiThe Chile team slips from the bottom of the table and overtakes Chile to six points. Even though they are still five points out of the playoff spot, they still have plenty of time to recover if they can build on the improvements shown last week.

However, having only appeared in the World Cup once in the last decade, Peru will need to improve on offense and on the road if they want to make another World Cup appearance.

Peru have scored just three goals in their qualifying matches so far and have taken most of their points at home in the last two seasons.

Team news

Brazil striker Igor Jesus on October 10, 2024© Imago

After making his goalscoring debut in Chile, Igor Jesus will once again start the attack for Brazil here and he could be joined by his Santiago-winning Botafogo team-mate Luiz Henrique.

Dorival will be without it Lucas Paqueta However, his warning on Thursday triggered a suspension, that is Bruno Guimaraes will probably come into the starting eleven after just one substitution.

The biggest injuries for the hosts entering the camp were affected Vinicius Junior And Alissonalthough the Selecao will probably do without the latter at the games in November Ederson is ready to score again.

Peru had to miss many injured players in these international matches, but that didn't stop them from claiming a victory on Friday Miguel Araujo scored his first goal for his country to take all three points, and the defender should start again in what could look like a back five for the visitors.

Important midfield duo Renato Tapia And Yoshimar Yotun Both are out due to injury while they start as strikers Gianluca Lapadula had to leave the squad late due to his own setback.

Miguel Trauco And Anderson Santamaria If they hadn't been injured they could have played, but the three central defenders who started against Uruguay more than deserved another chance in the starting eleven here.

Possible starting lineup for Brazil:
Ederson; Danilo, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Abner; Bruno Guimaraes, Andre; Raphinha, Luiz Henrique, Igor Jesus; Rodrygo

Possible Peru starting lineup:
Gallesse; Polo, Araujo, Zambrano, Abram, Callens; Sun, Castillo, Pena; Valera, Flores

We say: Brazil – Peru 2-0

Having narrowly crossed the finish line in Santiago, Dorival Junior would be grateful for more routine success here, as picking up six points in October would do wonders for Brazil's position in the standings.

Despite their first win of the season against Uruguay last week, the trip to Brazil is not the next game Peru would have chosen, although the Selecao are not in great shape having lost all five previous meetings against their upcoming hosts.
