The Mauricio Pochettino era got off to a winning start on Saturday as the United States men's national soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Panama in Austin, Texas.

Pochettino's USMNT faces a tougher test on Tuesday when it plays its first friendly in Mexico since 2012. Although the USMNT has not lost to Mexico on U.S. soil since 2019, it has only one all-time victory in Mexico, that one in this 2012 friendly.

Pochettino brings extensive coaching experience to the US program, replacing former coach Gregg Berhalter, who was fired after the USMNT was unceremoniously fired following a disappointing performance in the 2024 Copa America. Pochettino was announced as the new USMNT coach on September 10 and it took less than two years for the team to be fit for the 2026 World Cup following the Copa America debacle.

The road to the 2026 World Cup got off to a good start thanks to goals from Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi in Saturday's win. For Musah, Saturday's tally was his first international goal. The victory snapped a four-game winning streak for the USMNT and a two-game deficit against Panama.
