Pakistan vs England: Kamran Ghulam scores a hundred on his debut in Multan

England hit a century on debut against Pakistan's Kamran Ghulam on the opening day of the second Test in Multan.

Ghulam, who was in the side after Babar Azam's heavy defeat, scored a magnificent 118 to help the home team reach 259-5.

The 29-year-old's effort dispelled any suspicion that batting would be impossible on a pitch that was also used in England's innings victory at this ground last week.

When spinner Jack Leach reduced Pakistan to 19-2 within the first 10 overs, there were fears that the Test would become little more than a lottery and be over in a maximum of three days.

But Ghulam shared a third-wicket stand of 149 with Saim Ayub, who made 77, and then continued after losing Ayub and Saud Shakeel in quick succession.

Overall, England's spinners struggled and the tourists' threat came from their seamers, including captain Ben Stokes, who was playing his first Test since July. Stokes, Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts were great at swinging the ball backwards on either side of the tee.

Ghulam was able to put together another partnership of 65 with Muhammad Rizwan, with the wicketkeeper crucially surviving a lead from Potts that England failed to check.

In the final stages, Shoaib Bashir bounced back from a difficult day by defeating Ghulam and ending the Test with confidence.
