Jesse Lee Soffer on Wes' Job, Partner (Exclusive)

Jesse Lee Soffer on Wes' Job, Partner (Exclusive)

(Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for FBI: International Season 4 premiere “A Leader, Not a Tourist.”

Welcome to Budapest, Wes Mitchell (Jesse Lee Soffer)! The Fly Team gets a new boss FBI: International Premiere.

Wes heads to Budapest after his partner is shot (and later dies) in a home invasion in Los Angeles. It all leads back to Greg (Beau Knapp), who runs a youth center and uses it to recruit young men and force them to work for him. Greg ends up getting arrested, but he warns Wes that he will find him. And Cameron Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) suggests that Wes – who trained her – take over the management of the team.

Below, Soffer breaks down the season four premiere.

Greg warns Wes that he'll be looking for him when he gets out. Is Wes at all worried? How will we see this?

Jesse Lee Soffer: Wes is definitely not worried about it and it's actually coming back, and I think that definitely takes Wes by surprise. There's a really fun arc to play out with this character leading up to the midseason finale.

This is so personal for him because he lost his partner because of this man –

Fully. Yes, absolutely.

How much grief will we expect from Wes in the future?

The grief happens off camera. I think when Wes is on the team, Wes is put in this new position, this new leadership position, and he shows his whole face, but the whole reason he took this job is for him to take a different path and come had to go to that fork in the road and say, “Okay, this is where I'm going now and I need to leave this stuff behind.”

Cameron has a great suggestion that he take over the boss role at the end of the premiere. What makes him accept it? What influence does his conversation with Mike – he looks at the medallion at the end – have on this?

It definitely does. It takes into account a ton and its pitch takes into account a ton. He trusts her, he respects her, and he appreciates that she's gotten to a point in her career where she's kind of grateful for the way he coached her. And with Mike gone, and kind of Mike's last words to him, I think he takes that and says, “Okay, I've got to make some decisions here and I'm going to bury myself in work and move through this stuff and do it.” You continue.”

We saw the end of his relationship in the premiere. Is he even thinking about romance in the future?

Not yet. He's definitely just focused on work right now.

Doesn't it sound like we can see anything yet?

I'm just saying I haven't seen anything yet and as far as I can tell he's in the works.

We see him clash with the local police in the premiere. Is there a point where maybe he goes too far and we'll see?

Always. I always think. Yes definitely. He always goes a little too far, but not so far that we can't get out of it.
