Half-century from Duckett as England respond vigorously to Pakistan's 366 – Sport

Ben Duckett hit a brisk half-century as England reached 88-1 at tea on day two of the second Test in Multan in reply to Pakistan's 366 on Wednesday.

In the opening game of the break, Duckett was on 53 and Ollie Pope was five not out while the visitors had lost Zak Crawley on 27.

England were 278 runs behind with nine wickets intact.

Duckett reached his 12th Test half-century in 47 balls as England advanced quickly against a Pakistan attack that has just one front striker in Aamer Jamal.

The hosts used off-spinner Sajid Khan in the second over as they chased an early England wicket, but opener Crawley held on twice.

With the score at 49-0, he survived a run-out as Sajid cleared the stumps before grabbing the ball and scoring England's opener from his crease after being sent back by Duckett.

On the 24th, Crawley overturned a leg-before decision by New Zealand umpire Chris Gaffaney against Sajid before his luck ran out three runs later.

Crawley eventually fell behind left-arm spinner Noman Ali as the home side successfully reviewed a not-out decision from Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

Spinner Jack Leach grabbed four wickets and helped England dismiss Pakistan for 366.

The left-armer took 4-114 while pacers Brydon Carse finished with 3-50 and Matthew Potts 2-66 as Pakistan managed to add 107 after continuing the day on 259-5.

Debutant Kamran Ghulam scored the most points with 118 and Saim Ayub scored 77.

Bottom-placed Pakistan frustrated England as the hosts reached 358-8 at lunch after the visitors took three early wickets.

All-rounders Aamer Jamal and Noman Ali were at the crease with 37 and 29 respectively as they thwarted England's attack with an unbroken stand of 49 for the ninth wicket.

Pakistan progressed on 259-5 and England struck early on a reused pitch at the Multan Stadium, which not only provided some spin but also helped the seamers gain reverse swing.

Carse (2-43) dismissed Mohammad Rizwan for 41 in Jamie Smith's third over of the day.

Rizwan hit five boundaries with his trembling knock.

Carse's teammate Potts (2-65) forced a lead from Salman Agha with a sharp rising throw, while Smith took another regulation catch to leave the hosts 302-7.

Agha's knock of 31 also had five boundaries.

Leach picked up his third wicket of the innings when he dismissed Sajid Khan for two count, caught by Joe Root at short cover.

Ghulam hit a century on the first day to secure Pakistan's innings.

England lead the three-match series 1-0 after their innings win in the first Test, also in Multan.
