“Georgie and Mandy’s First Wedding” looks different

Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy's (Emily Osment) married life will look very different than it did when they were part of the CBS comedy Young Sheldon. It is not the absence of the young scientific protégé that will be the big change. The big difference is that “Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage” – which opens on October 17 at 8pm – is not shot like a film, but is shot in front of a live studio audience.

Executive producer Steven Molaro explains why “Young Sheldon” was a single-camera production to make it look different than “The Big Bang Theory,” the series that spawned both spinoffs. “Theory” was filmed in front of a studio audience.

“So we had an opportunity here to turn things on their head and turn them back into an audience show,” says Molaro. “We also had a cast that we are very confident in will simply shine in front of the audience and benefit from that energy.”

Series creator Chuck Lorre is well-versed in the multi-camera format, having used it in productions ranging from “Two and a Half Men” to “Bob Hearts Abishola.” According to him, George & Mandy is a family story and the multi-camera approach is better suited to show this as it is not cinema and theater.

One of the reasons the creative team was confident with the move was the chemistry between Osment and Jordan. Osment was originally only hired for one episode of Young Sheldon, but the team liked her work so much that she became a permanent fixture and is now one of the stars of the spin-off.

By adding Osment's character, the director changed the way Jordan would play Georgie as he became involved with an older woman. His character matured quickly, a change he accepted.

“It's nice to see him grow up and become the man of the household, and I think we'll see that a lot along the way,” Jordan says. “It's hard for a lot of young parents out there, and I think it might be helpful for a few people to watch a show like this and engage with it a little bit, but I think it'll be nice to see him grow up “see.” become a greater man than he is now.”

One thing that helps Jordan understand how to play a new father is the fact that he became a father for the first time just months before the new series premiered. That's a plus since the Texas native came to “Young Sheldon” with only a few professional acting roles under his belt, including the Netflix film “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter.”

“Because he was living at home as an 18-year-old, this hurdle kind of came into his life and kind of made him take it a step further,” Osment says of the changes she saw in Jordan's character. “I think it proves that they make a very good team together because they get on each other's nerves and she tries to pull him along sometimes, but she's older.

“And what a gift to be able to help someone grow up and help her become a mother. I think it’s a beautiful story.”

Osment is the exact opposite of Jordan, as she brought decades of experience to the role. Her credits include The Kominsky Method, Mom, Pretty Smart and DeadEndia. She also starred in the FOX drama series “Almost Family” and the Freeform comedy series “Young & Hungry.”

Both actors are under particular pressure with Georgie & Mandy as they release the latest installment in a franchise that has seen two series become huge hits. Osment doesn't feel any pressure, but sees it as a gift to be part of the franchise.

She says, “I feel like we’re primed to hit a home run. I'm just grateful every day that I get to wake up and do what I love. And for me it's not necessarily the macro. It's every day that I wake up and spend time with such wonderful people and can make people laugh.

“And it makes me happy every day that I get to do that. So if I do my best every day, I just have to trust that the end result will be good.”

Jordan only realized the magnitude of the launch when his girlfriend pointed out that his name was linked to one of the biggest new shows coming out. His approach to the new series is to simply “go with the flow.”

The flow's helpers also include Rachel Bay Jones, Will Sasso, Dougie Baldwin and Jessie Prez. New episodes will be available the following day on the Paramount+ streaming service.
