Ryan Murphy says The Beauty is 'sort of Game Of Thrones on scale'

If it seems like there's been a lot of news about Ryan Murphy coursing through the pop culture bloodstream lately, that's largely because there's been a lot of Murphy news, period: the producer-writer came to life called four various shows over a 10 day period including Netflix MonsterFX's grotesque, American Sports History: Aaron HernandezAnd Doctor Odyssey– plus new seasons of 9-1-1 and his spin-off, while also saying a lot of nonsense, such as the Menendez family's reactions to the TV show he made about them. Recently, Murphy spoke about his upcoming series The beautywhich stars Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos and Ashton Kutcher and is, to put it more simply, about a sexually transmitted disease that makes you hot before it kills you. (We said Murphy was hard-working, not subtle.) Now the producer has revealed a lot about the series, most notably the fact that it represents a new dimension for him, with the producer specifically comparing it to HBO's game of Thrones.

Here is Murphy speaking the premise and putting previously published material into his own words:

This is something I've never done before: a sci-fi medical show about a new virus that mutates and is sexually transmitted and turns you into your absolutely perfect self. And the question is: how far would you go to be beautiful? What would you sacrifice for it and does it matter? This show I watched is what I call the Ozempic culture. A little shot, and suddenly you will look and feel better, and all your problems will disappear. But what are you really working on? What's wrong with you that makes you feel like you have to do this? Sometimes it's health, sometimes it's vanity.

What's even more noticeable is that Murphy appears to be going even further in terms of budget worldwide, as the show is set to film in multiple locations across Europe. “Venice, Rome and Paris,” Murphy noted. “It's kind of a very big budget game of Thrones in its magnitude.” Even though there are so many of them that it's difficult to generalize, we tend to think of Murphy shows as rather modest affairs in the money department: the fashion budgets may be enormous, but many of his series seem pretty limited overall, focused on big, interesting performances from its various stars. (Including Peters and Jeremy Pope, for whom Murphy said he wrote this latest show specifically.) It's not that Murphy hasn't gone fantastical, even apocalyptic, before – this Is the man who helped shape it American horror story– but hearing how he prepares to develop new ambition is really interesting (and somewhat frightening)… even if the premise of the series, which is based on a series of comics, seems a little familiar.
