Layoffs in the technology sector continue: Meta is cutting positions in WhatsApp and Instagram teams

As The Verge reports, Meta has begun laying off employees across various divisions, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs. Unlike large-scale company-wide layoffs, these cuts appear to be related to restructuring within specific teams.

Some employees, like Jane Manchun Wong — known for uncovering unannounced app features before joining Meta's Threads team in 2023 — have publicly shared news of their layoffs.

The company is reallocating resources to align with its long-term goals, including relocating teams and moving employees into other roles, according to Meta spokesman Dave Arnold. He said in the report: “When a position is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for the affected employees.”

These layoffs come after previous cuts at Meta's Reality Labs division this year. Since 2022, Meta has been reducing its workforce, starting with 11,000 layoffs due to overestimated post-pandemic growth. An additional 10,000 jobs were cut in 2023 as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's “Year of Efficiency” plan.
