“She’s fine,” he told the GMA Anker, who revealed that they “recognized early on what was important.”

But the “hard illness” is “very tiring,” he explained, which is probably why Scialfa hasn't been seen performing recently with the E Street Band, of which she has been a member since 1984.

Her absence is apparently the reason why they finally decided to reveal her diagnosis of multiple myeloma – a type of blood cancer – which she first suffered from in 2018.

“She hadn't played in the band for a long time and I don't think people knew why. 'Where's Patti?'” Springsteen surmised.

The revelation came in Springsteen's new documentary: Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Bandwhich chronicles the behind-the-scenes preparations for the band's 2023-2024 world tour.

“Touring has become a challenge for me,” Scialfa shared in the documentary. “It affects my immune system, so I just have to be careful about what I do and where I go,” she explained. “Every now and then I come to a show or two and get to sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a pleasure.”
