Coastal flood warning for three New Jersey counties for Friday

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood warning at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, effective for Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May counties from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

“Flooding of up to a foot above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near coastlines and tidal waterways,” the weather service says. “Tides will remain elevated and there is a potential for further minor coastal flooding around high tide this weekend.”

“At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, as well as along inland tidal waterways. Some partial or complete road closures are possible,” the weather service added. “If travel is necessary, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary measures to protect flood-prone property.”

Weathering the Storm: Flood Safety Guidelines from the Weather Service

Flooding can pose a significant hazard, especially if you live in a flood-prone area or are camping in a low-lying region. To ensure your safety, the Weather Service offers important flood protection guidelines:

Find higher ground:

If you are in a flood-prone area or camping in a low-lying location, your first step should be to move to higher ground.

Follow the evacuation instructions:

If local authorities issue an evacuation order, follow it immediately. Before leaving, secure your home by locking it.

Disconnect utilities and devices:

If time permits, disconnect your utilities and appliances. This reduces the risk of electrical hazards during flooding.

Avoid flooded basements and flooded areas:

Stay away from basements or rooms where electrical outlets or cords are submerged. This helps prevent electrical accidents.

Quick evacuation for your safety:

If you notice sparks or hear any humming, crackling, cracking or popping noises, evacuate immediately. Do not enter water that may be electrically charged.

Do not walk in flood waters:

Never attempt to walk through flood water. Even 6 inches of fast-moving water can force you off your feet.

Find high ground if trapped:

If you become trapped by running water, get to the highest point available and call emergency services at 911.

During heavy rain, there is a risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions. It is important that you never attempt to drive through water on the road, no matter how deep it may be. According to the weather service, just 30 centimeters of water can wash away most vehicles. Prioritize your safety by staying informed and prepared.
