What Makes a Director a Great Actor:

“You shouldn't have to talk to an actor much when you hire them. You saw in them something that you want for the role and that can lead to chaos and you have to make sure everyone knows that your vision is very clear because they are going to take control. We will identify a weakness in a director and say, oh ok, I get that… all actors want to direct… and there has to be a captain who keeps that vision clear…”

On the importance of dialogue and the genre of comedy:

“You can have the greatest idea for a film… but what do I say as an actor? Do you know what our dialogue is? How relaxed or tense is the pun you bring to the page? I always like to push the boundaries of genres because people don't know that comedies are funny. So I really like my comedies straight…Alan Arkin…he was my favorite. He was so funny because he just played it like someone doesn't think anything is funny…so anything that kind of points the finger at “that's funny” doesn't work script-wise…like a punchline in a movie really because it doesn’t really work in life…”

On being in a punk band before acting:

“That was us Beastie Boys Rip off, but yeah, we had fun…it took a few years before I got a cool scar on my temple…”

Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) apologizes in between game of Thrones:

“I love Charlie Dancehe's one of my favorite people and he played my dad on the show and all my dad did on the show was humiliate me and sentence me to death… so he made a habit of it because we would really get into that Investing things…talking about great dialogue. Dan Wiess And David Benioff He gave us the most amazing dialogue, so much so that it really felt like he was really alive… Between each take he came over to me and gently touched my shoulder. We didn't want to upset it because of time constraints, and it also felt very fatherly. He played a terrible person, but he's one of my favorite people and it was a shame how it ended in the toilet…”

On persistence in sticking with acting:

“I was angry, I think, too angry for a long time… I just knew what the entertainment industry was serving up to people of my stature, and that wasn't acting for me. But I surrounded myself with really brilliant people. Not intentionally, just friendships. I call it the tribe and we have carried this friendship and the working environment into the future together as one and the same. Because you can't do it alone, I couldn't do it alone and that's the beauty of what I do professionally, the collaboration. So I was just lucky enough to find really great people who inspired me more every day.
