2024 NFL Bad Beats: The Saints score a last-minute touchdown and move the total score

Every week in NFLBettors, sportsbooks, or both are complaining of some form of bad beat.

Whether it's a spread pick, a moneyline bet, or a total score bet, there is always an event that affects multiple bets.

In the Thursday Night Football game between the Saints and the Broncos, it was the total number of points (37) that caused some trouble for bettors.

Let's take a look at how it all went.

Last minute touchdown for New Orleans

From the start of the game, Denver dominated this match. Sean Payton's squad took a 16-3 lead at the end of the first half and made it 26-3 by the fourth period.

With two rookie quarterbacks starting a game Thursday night, several bettors called the under based on the point total, closing at 37. The score was still 26-3 with just over six minutes to play, meaning that the total score was 29 points.

But then, just six plays into that drive, Spencer Rattler was sacked, causing him to fumble. Cody Barton recovered it and brought it home for a touchdown. After the extra point the score was now 33:3, increasing the total to 36.

Suddenly it was a break out in a sweat.

The Saints recorded seven plays when the two-minute warning sounded and were at Denver's 48-yard line. Backup quarterback (and third replacement for the injured Derek Carr) Jake Haener was forced into action due to an injury to Rattler. He remained under center for four plays before the Saints called their first timeout with just 1:25 left in the game.

On the very next play, Haener threw a touchdown to Cedric Wilson Jr. Not only was it their only touchdown of the game, it was doomed for the under-bettors – the score went from 36 to 43.

The final score would remain 33-10, resulting in consecutive home losses by more than 20 points for the Saints – the first time since Weeks 16 and 17 of the 2001 season.
