There will be strict tire grip enforcement in the Cottonwood Canyons this winter

Cottonwood Heights, Utah – Traffic in the Cottonwood Canyons is no secret. On a powder day, reaching your final destination can be a brutal undertaking.

Several factors are responsible for this situation, but locals have pointed out that UDOT's tire traction policy is not being enforced. In summary, in snowy conditions, UDOT requires vehicles to have a specific tire type (3PSMF or M+S depth of at least 5/32) or chain evidence. Enforcement of this policy is inadequate and has become a common point of criticism among social media users in Utah. However, that will soon change.

Last month, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced some significant changes to Cottonwood Canyons with an epic song selection and firm handshakes.

It was officially announced Wednesday that UDOT Cottonwood Canyons and the Cottonwood Heights & Sandy Police Departments are collaborating on a new tire liability enforcement program.

Yesterday, UDOT Cottonwood Canyons announced more details about its new tire inspection program. Law enforcement agencies are set up below the mouth of the canyons to check that people have the right tires. If not, they will be asked to turn back.

Purchasing one of these stickers for your car doesn't cost any money. All you have to do is go to one of the 66 inspection centers and have your tires checked. The checks will last from now until February 28, 2025.

Ultimately, the goal of the sticker program is to speed up tire inspections so these new checkpoints don't create additional congestion. For tourists, several car rental companies such as Enterprise and Budget will participate in the program.
