Hundreds of schools could have Listeria-infected chickens; one is in Delaware

Some of the chickens recently recalled because of listeria ended up in a school cafeteria in Delaware.

The nationwide recall of BrucePac chicken products has expanded to the public education sector, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture updated its BrucePac recall notice, warning that more than 200 charter, parochial and public schools may have received BrucePac products contaminated with listeria .

More than 50 schools in Philadelphia and more than 30 in New Jersey are among the schools that may have received BrucePac products.

Which Delaware school is on BrucePac's recall list?

Newark Charter School is the only school in Delaware to receive BrucePac products.

“The products that went to these schools were not part of the USDA national school lunch and breakfast programs; Schools also purchase food directly from other suppliers,” the USDA’s BrucePac recall alert states. “The Food Safety and Inspection Service will continue to update this and the retail product list as it receives additional information.”

What is the BrucePac recall?

In early October, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Service and Safety Division alerted consumers to the recall of 9,986,245 pounds of poultry products manufactured by Oklahoma-based BrucePac due to a possible listeria outbreak.

The USDA originally said BrucePac products were widely distributed to and sold at several popular supermarkets, including Aldi, Trader Joe's and Walmart, before expanding the recall warning to public schools this week.
