Jets superfan Fireman Ed says team is phasing him out – NBC New York

Fireman Ed says he's being silenced by the JETS! Jets! Jets! Jets!

Ed Anzalone, the superfan whose famous New York Jets chant has echoed at the team's home games for decades, said in a social media post that he hasn't seen that much time on MetLife Stadium's video boards.

“I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but they’re letting us phase out,” Anzalone said in an Instagram video posted Tuesday. “I would like to know if anyone knows anything. Please let me know because it’s obvious it’s happening and it needs to stop because we need the home advantage.”

Anzalone, who is known for wearing his Jets-style fireman's helmet while chanting at key points in games, said the lack of screen time was evident in the Jets' last two home games at MetLife Stadium, where Losses to the Denver Broncos and Buffalo gave Bills. He said after Monday's loss to the Bills he received text messages and emails from fans “on the big screens.”

“Especially last night – although also in the game against Denver – especially last night we scored a touchdown and normally traditionally we are always shown on the screen,” Anzalone said, referring to himself and two other fans. “(We) sing the Jet chant to get the crowd going, which is a staple at JetLife Stadium.”

“Even on defense, which is most important, they usually put us on the screen to get the crowd going. This creates a more complete experience for the fans and we can get the defensive chant going. But.” Something is going on in the Jet production team at JetLife Stadium.

Ian O'Connor, author of Out of the Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers, explains why Davante Adams won't turn the Jets into a Super Bowl team, but perhaps a playoff team.

Anzalone has been a fixture at Jets games since the late 1980s, back in the team's former home stadium, Giants Stadium. He briefly stopped attending games in 2012 after former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's infamous “butt fumble.” In 2015, he returned and resumed his role as stadium hype man.

But his post on Tuesday was met with mixed reactions from his nearly 55,000 followers and other Jets fans.

“They stopped in 2012. They stopped once, it’s time for the Jets to move on,” one user wrote.

“Man, you have the stadium in your hands. Keep it up fireman,” another wrote.

“Aaron (Rodgers) doesn’t want to hear your chants,” wrote another.

The Jets, who have lost three straight games and fallen to 2-4, are on the road for their next two games. They return to MetLife Stadium on October 31 for a Thursday Night Football game against the Houston Texans.

Fireman Ed will be there to do his signature vocals, but how often will the JETS show him on the video boards?

“Something is going on,” Anzalone said. “Please let me know if you know anything. Thank you. Go Jets!”
