How old is Stephen Vogt? The Guardians manager is one of the youngest captains in the MLB

Older managers have performed well in October in recent years, despite the trend toward younger, more analytical managers across MLB.

The last three managers to win the World Series were all over 65, and the youngest manager to ever take a team to the World Series in the last three years was 58. However, the Guardians got younger after Terry Francona resigned last year – much younger.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt is one of the youngest managers in baseball and was an active player as recently as two years ago. That didn't stop him from spearheading a resurgent season in his first year in Cleveland, leading the franchise to the ALCS for the first time in eight years.

Here's what you need to know about Vogt's age and where he ranks among the youngest MLB managers.

How old is Stephen Vogt?

Vogt is 39 years old. He turns 40 on November 1st.

Vogt was one of eight managers hired before the 2024 season, but he was unique for several reasons. His playing career had only just ended about 13 months ago and his experience as a coach was extremely limited. Vogt spent his first year off the field as a quality control and bullpen coach with the Mariners.

At the same time, Vogt spent most of his career catching. Due to the demands of the position from a leadership perspective, the catcher-to-manager pipeline is common. Catchers also have a deep understanding of both hitting and pitching that is unique to any other position.

The Guardians were apparently impressed when they interviewed Vogt. They took the risk and brought in a young manager who knows exactly how to communicate with today's players, and it paid off with a 16-win improvement in 2024.

Youngest MLB Managers

Vogt is the second-youngest manager in baseball, behind only Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol.

manager Old team
Oliver Marmol 38 Cardinals
Stephan Vogt 39 Guardian
Rocco Baldelli 43 Gemini
John Schneider 44 Blue Jays
Carlos Mendoza 44 Mets
Kevin Cash 46 Rays
Mark Kotsay 48 athletics
Alex Cora 49 Red Sox

Vogt is one of two managers under 40, although he turns 40 in early November. There is a significant gap between Vogt and the third youngest manager, 43-year-old Rocco Baldelli, followed by 44-year-old captains John Schneider and Rocco Baldelli.

The next wave of managers could see Vogt slide down the list, but the Guardians manager is currently part of a youth movement in the position.

Vogt was a two-time All-Star selection with the A's in 2015 and 2016 and hit a career-high 18 home runs and a .783 OPS in 2015. He struggled to hit the mark the last three seasons, but his leadership helped keep him in the majors until he ended his career in 2022 with a fairytale home run in his final game.

That was the end of Vogt as a player, but it was far from the end of his baseball career. He quickly earned his first job as a manager and was able to stay with a loyal Guardians franchise for quite a while after an impressive first season.
