More state troopers linked to Karen Read case under investigation – NBC Boston

The Massachusetts State Police unit that investigated Karen Read is getting a new chief, weeks after a new chief took over the entire agency.

Police announced Friday evening that Det. Lt. Brian Tully, who is under internal investigation, has been transferred to another department for the time being and the agency is discontinuing his old job as head of the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office's detective division.

“Detective Lieutenant Tully will remain available to assist the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office in any cases in which he has previously been involved,” state police said in a statement, noting the investigation is ongoing.

Tully testified at the Read trial. Officer Michael Proctor, who was part of his unit and led the Read investigation, was suspended without pay for derogatory comments about Read that came to light during the trial.

Other state troopers with ties to the Karen Read case are under internal investigation.

The police statement said new Massachusetts State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble decided the move was “in the best interest of the department’s public safety mission,” but did not elaborate.

The Massachusetts State Police has posted a vacancy for the position of Unit Commander of the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office. Colonel Noble has conducted an initial review and believes this decision is in the best interest of the Department's public safety mission.

The unit commander oversees approximately 20 state troopers who investigate unattended deaths, drug trafficking and organized crime, sexual assault and abuse, theft and related, financially motivated crimes. The unit also includes a digital evidence analysis laboratory that processes digital evidence such as computers and cell phones from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

The position was previously held by Detective Lieutenant Brian Tully, who moved to a temporary assignment in the Investigative Services Division. Detective Lieutenant Tully will remain available to assist the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office in any cases in which he has previously been involved. Detective Lieutenant Tully remains the subject of an ongoing internal investigation.
