History of the team's rallying cry for 2024

History of the team's rallying cry for 2024

If you watch the New York Mets, you'll probably see a sign in the locker room that says “OMG” and you may not know why.

First and foremost: The Mets are a team that experiences a lot of humor, whimsy and joy in a unique way. Nowhere is this more evident than when they use a sign that says “OMG” as part of a celebration. But what does it all mean and where does it come from?

The story is whimsical, silly and surprising and also makes perfect sense for a team like the Mets.

The reason for this is veteran infielder José Iglesias

Come with us and let us take you back to New York at the start of this season. It was May 31st and the Mets were 24-33 (.438), at a very low point in the MLB season for the organization. It looked like a year of rebuilding.

Iglesias, a 34-year-old infielder who signed a minor league contract with the Mets, was called up to the majors and made his debut with the team. Although it didn't seem like a big deal at the time, it was a turning point for the franchise.

They started winning and from spring to summer the mood in the team got better and better. Iglesias played well, but as it turns out, he was also working behind the scenes on his side career as a musician.

Now it was June 28th and the Mets were suddenly one of the hottest teams in baseball.

Iglesias, who was still playing well, was also about to release a song under his name Candelita. As it turns out, Iglesias also happens to be a star musician, because of course the Mets had a minor leaguer who is also a Latin pop star.

JOSE IGLESIAS: Mets teammates joined the infielder to say “OMG” after another win at Citi Field

The infielder performed his latest single “OMG” at Citi Field while all of his teammates witnessed the amazing moment. It was an unforgettable sight.

The Mets are 49-33 (.588) since that spectacular performance in June.

The song now has over 4 million YouTube views and debuted at number 1 billboard Latin Digital Song Sales Charts.

Iglesias also performed the song at MLB All-Star Weekend during the Home Run Derby in Texas.

So what's with the sign?

The “OMG” sign was created by an artist named Jerome McCroy, who goes by the stage name Jaymaccustoms.

It was based on a T-shirt that Alex Cohen, the wife of Mets owner Steve Cohen, posted on her Instagram. McCroy gave the sign to Alex, who passed it to someone who could put it up in the locker room.

The Mets use it to celebrate in the dugout every time they hit a home run. The celebration is often led by Mets pitcher Luis Severino, who has become one of the more reliable arms in the rotation for New York.

Iglesias is also playing fantastic baseball and is enjoying a 20-game winning streak as of this writing. He plans to release a remix soon, perhaps even featuring music icon Bad Bunny.
