Here's a recent soccer story from The Associated Press:

LONDON (AP) — Thomas Tuchel was hired as England coach on Wednesday and tasked with ending the national team's decades-long wait for a trophy.

The German, who previously coached Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, has signed an 18-month contract starting in January and running until the 2026 World Cup in the USA.

“This is a really exciting day for the English game. “We have appointed one of the best coaches in the world,” said Mark Bullingham, head of the English Football Association, at the unveiling of Wembley Stadium in Tuchel. “Our goal is always to win a major tournament and we believe Thomas will give us the best possible chance of achieving that at the next Men’s World Cup.”

By then it will have been 60 years since England won their only major trophy – the 1966 World Cup.

Fourteen different managers have failed to break that streak, with Gareth Southgate coming closest, leading the country to two successive European Championship finals before stepping down in July.

Champions League winner Tuchel has delivered silver medals across Europe and has expressed his intention to emulate that success with England.

“I understood very quickly that it was a big task,” he said, adding that he wanted to get England “over the finish line and try to put a second star on the jersey.”

The 51-year-old Tuchel will be the third foreign coach of the national team after the late Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. This has led to criticism in some British media, with the Daily Mail publishing a back page headline calling it a “dark day for England”.

While accepting congratulations from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, right-wing Reform Party leader Nigel Farage asked on X: “Why can't we have an English manager?”

Tuchel laughed when asked if he had a message for disappointed England fans about a foreign coach.

“I’m sorry, I have a German passport,” he said. “Hopefully I can convince them and show them and prove to them that I am proud to be England manager and that I will do everything I can to show respect for that role and for this country.”

Bullingham said the FA interviewed several candidates before settling on Tuchel but did not reveal any names.

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola and former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp were both considered possible candidates.

“Some were clearly more ready for the role than others,” Bullingham said. “We were thrilled to work with Thomas and we believe he gives us the best chance of winning the World Cup.”

In Southgate, Tuchel succeeds one of England's most successful coaches, who led the country to both the World Cup semi-finals and the two European Championship finals.

Southgate resigned after eight years following the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Tuchel fits the FA's mandate to hire a coach who has delivered at the highest level and is also familiar with the English game.

As Chelsea manager, he defeated Guardiola's Manchester City and won the Champions League within months of taking over. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup with the Premier League club.

He has won league titles with PSG in France and Bayern in Germany. He takes over the England job after leaving Bayern at the end of last season.

Tuchel will be supported by his former Chelsea assistant Anthony Barry, who most recently worked with Portugal at the European Championships.

When they assume their role, the World Cup qualifying draw will have taken place in December.

U21 coach Lee Carsley will continue to oversee England as interim coach for the Nations League games against Greece and Ireland next month.
