Ohio State football suffered its first major setback of the 2024 college football season in Week 7 when Ryan Day's team was upset en route to the then-No. 3Oregon 32-31.

A week later, the fifth-ranked Buckeyes (5-1 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten) face their second bye of the season, which perhaps came at the right time.

Through the first seven weeks of the season, the Buckeyes' Chip Kelly-led offense led the Big Ten in several categories, including second in total offense (503 yards per game) and second in scoring (43, 5 points per game). Transfer quarterback Will Howard ranks sixth among the 18 quarterbacks in the Big Ten in passing yards (1,574 yards) and is tied for first in touchdowns thrown (14).

Is Ohio State football playing this week?

Ohio State is in its second of two byes this season in Week 8. The Buckeyes will return to action in Week 9 when they host Matt Rhule, Dylan Raiola and Nebraska at The Horseshoe.

The Week 9 game against Nebraska begins a six-game stretch for Ohio State to close out the regular season. After next week's game against the Cornhuskers, the Buckeyes will visit Beaver Stadium to take on No. 3 Penn State in Week 10 on Saturday, November 2nd. Ohio State then plays Purdue and No. 18 Indiana, with a trip to Northwestern coupled in the middle.

The Buckeyes will round out the 2024 regular season with perhaps the biggest game on their schedule each year: the game against No. 22 Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 30, at noon ET in Columbus. Ohio State will try to avoid losing three games to Michigan, while Day will try to avoid becoming the first Buckeyes coach to lose four straight to “That Team Up North” since John Wilce six times in 1922-28 episode lost.

ESPN Analytics projects Ohio State to win the regular season, with the Penn State game being the closest at 70.4% to 29.6% in favor of the Buckeyes.
