Newcastle's Kieran Trippier is out with a thigh injury, while Alexander Isak is set to return to Brighton

Kieran Trippier will miss Newcastle United's remaining games in October with a hamstring injury, but Alexander Isak is expected to return against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Trippier was sent off in the 71st minute of Newcastle's 0-0 draw at Everton before the international break and will be out for “a few weeks”, according to head coach Eddie Howe.

However, Callum Wilson and Lewis Miley are back in training and both have a chance of being included in the squad against Brighton. The pair will be assessed today alongside Isak in training.

“Kieran will miss this game,” Howe said. “He suffered a hamstring problem. We don’t think it’s necessarily too serious, but probably enough to keep him out for a few weeks.”

Isak missed the draws against Manchester City and Everton but after Anthony Gordon deputized through the middle in those two games, the club's record signing is close to returning to the starting XI at St James' Park tomorrow.

“Alex has trained and practiced well,” Howe said. “He trained earlier this week and looked good, so he will be in contention at the moment.”

Inside Newcastle Q&A: January transfer priorities? What is the position? Plans for St James' Park?

Wilson, on the other hand, has not played yet this season due to a back injury he sustained in pre-season which developed into a hamstring problem. But the 32-year-old has started training again and will be gradually reintegrated over the next few weeks.

“Callum has been training too. But with Callum we will continue to assess him day by day,” Howe said. “We have to make a decision about when is the best time to reintegrate him into the group. It's an everyday thing. The most important thing with Callum is that when we get him back we want to keep him for as long as possible. So we have to make the right decision.”

Miley is also out of the 2024-25 season, but the 18-year-old has recovered from a broken foot and is also being evaluated.

“Another player who returned during the international break looked really good,” Howe said. “He looks like he hasn’t been away. He's that kind of guy, very consistent. It was just great to see him. We have to manage it properly.”

Sven Botman, out since March with an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee, is making good progress but Howe doesn't expect to see him again until Christmas.

“We are looking beyond that,” Howe replied when asked whether the centre-back would return to first-team training before the November international break. “But he's hitting the right strength levels, he looks really good. We probably won't see him in training until after the next international break. He's getting closer, but it's a long way. The reality is that we are probably looking more towards the Christmas season.”
