Andoni Iraola's thoughts before the game

We had our chances against Liverpool and Chelsea, but we didn't score first. We have to start strong and try to make them uncomfortable.

It's a difficult game against the best defense in the Premier League, probably the world. We need the mentality to use every opportunity as if it were the last.

The Guardian MBM community has lost a loved one last week. Andrew Hurley was a huge Arsenal fan who had been a regular contributor to the football and cricket live blogs for over a decade.

This may sound strange, but one of the things I liked most about Andrew is how often he disagreed with me. The best live blogs have an ongoing discussion or riff that accompanies the action on the field. And although Andrew could be strident, he was always civil, a combination that is becoming increasingly depressingly rare in online discourse. He restored my faith that it is still possible to disagree amicably.

Andrew also had an enviable originality of thought. During a busy game, you might have 20 or 30 unread emails and only have 10 or 15 seconds to select one. When I saw Andrew's name, I usually went there because I knew he had something interesting to say, even if I didn't always agree with it.

Knew: the past tense. He left us way too young and I'm just so sorry for all his friends and family.

This is the first time Arsenal have started a Premier League game without Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard since Odegaard joined the club almost four years ago.

Mikel Arteta's pre-match thoughts

(On Bukayo Saka's absence) We tried to get him fit but he didn't have the right feeling so there's no point in pushing him. We have other options and this will be a good test for us.

He has completely different qualities to Martin (Odegaard) and for the type of game we expect we think he is very good.

Bournemouth are very well trained and have a lot of risk. It's very difficult to play against them.

preamble

Andoni Iraola feels like scratching herself. Since becoming Bournemouth manager his record against last season's top six has been dismal: P14, wins 0, draws, losses, 13 F4s, 32 points, 1. His team is far better, as they showed against the rest , and with one way or another of killing giants could easily end up in the top half. It would also improve Iraola's reputation from managerial stupidity.

All of this is easier said than done, especially tonight. Bournemouth face a relentless, hungry Arsenal team whose only loss of a point this season came with 10 men. If they win tonight they will be top, at least until Manchester City and Liverpool play tomorrow. You also have the opportunity to join a very small club. Liverpool is the only English club to have won 2,000 top-flight games; Arsenal didn't get out in 1999.

Start 5:30 p.m.
