Men's Soccer Records Shutout vs. No. 3 Marshall

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team put on a defensive mastery, recording a 0-0 draw against No. 3 Marshall on Friday at the CCU Soccer Complex.

With the tie, the Chants move to a Sun Belt record of 3-7-2, 1-2-2, while Marshall moves to 8-1-3, 3-0-2 Sun Belt this season.

The Chants have now recorded back-to-back shutouts against ranked opponents after drawing with No. 8 James Madison last Saturday.

The Thundering Herd appeared to take an early lead in the second minute of the game when Aymane Sordo found the net from a corner kick situation. However, the goal was canceled due to offside, leaving the score at 0-0.

After making three consecutive blocked shots, Marshall finally got a shot on frame in the 29th minuteTh minute when Takahiro Fujita shot from distance. However, Coast Guardsmen Harrison Gough deflected the ball away to meet the danger.

The Chants wanted to get on the scoreboard in the 42nd minutend minute at a quick break if Evan Howard threw the ball up Loed Klaasen. The sophomore then fired a shot into the bottom right corner, but it was deflected by the Marshall keeper's outstretched hand, keeping the score at 0-0.

At the end of the first half, Marshall led 8-1 in shots and 4-0 in corners.

In the 54thTh In the first minute, Marshall had one of the most promising chances of the game when Rai Pinto fired a shot from close range which Gough made a huge save to keep the flock at bay.

Marshall continued to pressure the Coastal defense, taking four shots and four corners over the next 15 minutes, but the Chants wouldn't let them break through.

Coastal had its own chance in the 1970sTh minute when the ball fell to the feet of Doug Hainerbut he shot just wide to keep the score at 0-0.

The Thundering Herd relentlessly attacked in the remaining 20 minutes of the game, firing eight shots. However, Gough continued his opening game and made four saves, including one from point-blank range in the 85th minuteTh minute to keep the score.

For the Chanticleers in 1987 it seemed to be the end of their dreamsTh Minute when Hainer passed the ball to Klaasen after a counterattack. Klaasen then fired a shot into the bottom left corner, but it wasn't enough to get past the Marshall keeper and end the game 0-0.

“I am incredibly proud of these boys, they have so much fighting spirit, resilience and competitiveness,” said head coach Shaun Docking. “It took a few weeks, but we've really come together and I think we're on the right track. I'm very pleased with the players' commitment and can't wait to continue building on that momentum!”

The Chanticleers remain at the CCU Soccer Complex to take on Old Dominion on October 23rd at 7pm ET.
