CLEVELAND — It's been 5,473 days since the Yankees won a pennant, which is pretty much pinstripe eternity.

The 15-year wait could be over tonight at Progressive Field.

In a city that once called George Steinbrenner, the owner of the defunct Yankees, home (and initially tried to buy Cleveland's MLB team), the Yankees are one win away from an AL pennant in 2024.

“It feels like nothing until we get it done,” Giancarlo Stanton said late Friday night after the Yankees' wild 8-6 win in Game 4 that set up a Game 5 elimination game against the Cleveland Guardians.

“We're going to enjoy this for now,” Stanton said as the Yankees took a three-games-to-one lead in this best-of-seven AL championship series. “But we have to make it (Saturday) and see you next.”

This “next” would be the Yankees’ first World Series appearance since 2009, against either the surprising Mets or Shohei Ohtani’s Dodgers.

Carlos Rodon, the Yankees' Game 1 starter and winner, faces Cleveland's Game 2 starter Tanner Bibee, who was ejected after just 1.1 innings last Tuesday night.

Both bullpens were maxed out, but the Yankees will benefit from Luke Weaver finishing Game 5 after not being used (but warming up late) in Game 4.

Earlier in the afternoon, left-hander Nestor Cortes (flexor tendon) pitched another simulated inning against live batters.

Cortes is “very strong moving forward,” manager Aaron Boone said. “If we get through this round, he has an excellent chance of being in the game” and making the World Series roster.
