John Stones' dramatic stoppage-time winner took Manchester City to the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Wolves.

The defender's header – in the fifth minute of stoppage time – came as referee Chris Kavanagh awarded the goal after review after it had initially been ruled out for offside, to the hosts' fury.

Josko Gvardiol canceled out Jorgen Strand Larsen's early opener for Wolves, who are winless this season and sit bottom of the Premier League.

City made it through the first half at Molineux but were stunned after seven minutes when some clever play saw Nelson Semedo sent off and his brilliant cross, which went past four City defenders, was deflected in by Strand Larsen.

The recalled Jose Sa, coming on for injured goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, soon saved Bernardo Silva as City controlled the game, but they had to wait until the 33rd minute to equalize when Gvardiol hit the top corner from 20 yards met.

However, this gave them no immediate basis for victory and the visitors found themselves up against a fearless opponent who denied them space, although Savinho could only deny a superb low save from Sa in first-half stoppage time.

Another Sa stop prevented Ruben Dias from staying out as City camped in the hosts' half, but they were almost caught out by a rare Wolves break when Matheus Cunha fired wide.

Guardiola called up Phil Foden and Jack Grealish from the bench but City had to wait until deep into stoppage time to find a winner.

Stones headed into Foden's corner but Silva was offside as he was in front of Sa, but in front of the City players referee Kavanagh awarded the goal that broke Wolves' hearts.
