The Steelers' decision to start Russell Wilson wasn't unanimous?

Russell Wilson will make his regular season debut with the Steelers tonight after fully recovering from his calf injury. The move to move him to the top of the quarterback depth chart followed Justin Fields helped the team post a 4-2 record, and it doesn't appear to have been the preference of some on the staff.

In conversation with Fox Sports head coach Jay Glazer Mike Tomlin noted that he had acted alone in selecting Wilson as the starter for Pittsburgh (video link). QB decisions are of course the responsibility of a head coach, but they are made in consultation with other members of the offensive coaching staff. Tomlin acknowledged that he will bear sole responsibility for Wilson's decision if it doesn't work out, a sign of the support Fields has within the organization.

The Bears' former first-rounder received additional first-team representation in training camp after Wilson was injured, and as the only healthy player on the pair in September, he faced no competition for the starting gig. Wilson recently returned to training and after a full week of overseeing reps with the first-team offense, signs were pointing to him getting the nod. Signed to a one-year contract, Wilson entered the offseason at the top of the depth chart, but Fields' performances in camp and the preseason earned him favor with Pittsburgh's decision-makers.

In fact, a report earlier this month said that Fields didn't appear to be in immediate danger of losing his starting gig. The 25-year-old helped Pittsburgh post a strong performance in the run game during his time at the helm, but entering Week 7 the team ranked just 28th in passing efficiency and 20th overall in scoring. Wilson will be tasked with improving those totals, although Fields has a chance to see some playing time despite his demotion.

The Steelers host the Jets to close out play on Sunday, and one of the team's key storylines will be Wilson's play in his first contest since the end of his ill-fated tenure with the Broncos. If the Seahawks' former Super Bowl champion struggles, calls will undoubtedly grow inside and outside the building for Tomlin to reverse his decision.
