49ers vs. Chiefs 4th quarter thread: Mistakes, mistakes and more mistakes

Mahomes missed Xavier Worthy for a touchdown early in the half. On second down, Worthy slipped and Deommodore Lenoir took advantage to intercept the ball.

Purdy used his legs to scramble, gain a first down and score a touchdown, making the game 14-12. The Niners decided not to chase points and it backfired.

Carlson, who missed six extra point attempts as a rookie in 2023, hit the left post. Theoretically, it was still too early to start chasing points. However, there was no guarantee that you would move the ball again without your top wideouts. One could also argue that all of this is even more of a reason to get in on it and rack up points while you still can.

But Shanahan trusted his defense and they rewarded him. After a three-pointer, the offense got the ball back.

With the Chiefs leading 14-3, Mahomes went 2-for-8 for five yards and another interception to that point. The 49ers defense was dominant all afternoon, keeping the offense in check.

Thanks to Mason, the offense got into Chiefs territory. On second down, Purdy got greedy and threw a fade to Chris Conley. He had Kittle wide open for a first down but decided to push the ball down the field.

That made it 3rd and 6th and Ronnie Bell came into the game. Bell seemed to get stuck, so he canceled his route. He wasn't on the same page as Purdy from a route depth perspective, and that led to another interception.

The defense had an opportunity to break the Chiefs' drive, but Kelce beat Ji'Ayir Brown in the third and moved the chains. On the next 33-yard drive, Mahomes embarrassed the entire defense. Mahomes made it to 4th down and scored to give the Chiefs a 21-12 lead.
