Xavier Newman injury update: Jets OL stretchered out after horrific collision with Steelers

Sunday night's game between the Jets and Steelers was temporarily delayed by a potentially serious injury to New York offensive lineman Xavier Newman.

Newman was hit hard by Steelers LB Patrick Queen in the third quarter while Beanie Bishop returned his second interception of the night. Newman stumbled backwards to the ground and appeared to hit the back of his head on the field as he fell.

Newman only entered the game after guard Alijah Vera-Tucker returned to the locker room with an injury of his own. The former Titans lineman, who has five NFL starts, had only appeared as a special teamer before filling in for Vera-Tucker.

Here's the latest information on Newman's condition following the horrific attack.

Update on Xavier Newman's injury

Newman took a hard hit from Queen, but perhaps the most frightening thing was the way his head hit the ground after he fell. Newman's neck appeared to snap back and medical personnel quickly surrounded him.

Newman lay on the ground for several minutes before he was stabilized and placed on a backboard. He was officially sidelined with a neck injury shortly after he had to be carried off the sidelines.

The NBC broadcast reported that Newman was conscious while being stabilized, and he reportedly had movement in his hands shortly afterward. He was taken to a local hospital

The 25-year-old Newman is a former undrafted free agent who spent all five seasons of his college career at Baylor before joining the Titans in 2022.
