Watch: Steelers DL Dean Lowry blocks Jets' field goal

After narrowly escaping a blocked punt in the first half against the New York Jets on “Sunday Night Football,” Pittsburgh Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith was unfazed.

Thanks to a well-placed, meaty right paw from veteran defensive lineman Dean Lowry, the Steelers blocked a field goal from Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein late in the third quarter, maintaining a 23-15 lead and pulling off another eye-catching play this season on special teams for the Black and Gold.

Two weeks ago against the Dallas Cowboys, fellow defender Isaiahh Loudermilk blocked a field goal attempt by Brandon Aubrey. Two weeks later, Lowry took his turn and blocked a field goal.

Before Lowry's blocked field goal, the Jets drove down the field and covered 57 yards in 11 plays. It looked like they were at least destined for a field goal, as the Steelers defense bent but didn't collapse.

Then Lowry came up big on the field goal block.

The Steelers signed Lowry to a two-year contract in free agency after he was cut by the Minnesota Vikings in the offseason. Pittsburgh landed the veteran to add depth to the defensive line. Although he didn't make much of an impact on defense, he was solid on special teams and showed off his skills with the blocked FG on Sunday night.

It's quite fitting that the Steelers blocked a field goal after Minkah Fitzpatrick cruelly negated the blocked extra point on a first-half extra point attempt where he was called for leverage.

There was no penalty this time, however, as the block gave the Steelers momentum back, giving the Steelers a 23-15 lead early in the fourth quarter.
