South Africa's newcomers Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder saw off Bangladesh's top order in the opening session on day one, leaving the hosts reeling by 60 for 6 at lunch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Monday. The duo bagged five wickets between them before Keshav Maharaj struck at Lunch's bat.

When they opted to bat, the Bangladesh batsmen found it difficult to cope with the movement on offer. Mulder proved quite strong with his away swings in the first hour of play as he picked three wickets despite the hosts taking a cautious approach. Shadman Islam was eliminated in the second half of the day while trying to pass the ball away from his body and in the process hit the ball towards the goalkeeper.

Mominul Haque failed when he tried to shoot a full-length ball that went the outside edge to the keeper. It was a similar story in Mulder's next over when Najmul Hossain Shanto's attempted clip took the lead and went straight into the hands of Keshav Maharaj at extra cover, reducing Bangladesh to 21 for 3 within the first half hour.

Mahmudul Hasan, who had resisted the difficult spell of Kagiso Rabada during this period, was able to briefly stabilize the collapse in the company of Mushfiqur Rahim. The duo hit three boundaries when the opportunity arose, but Rabada came back for the second time and broke through Mushfiqur's defense with a delivery that caught and cleaned the batsman. It was his 300th Test wicket – the fastest he achieved in terms of ball count.

Soon he even had Litton Das. However, in this case it was Tristan Stubbs at gully who used a blinder to blow up the batsman. In the final half hour of play, it seemed as if Mehidy Hasan Mahmudul was providing the support they needed as they braced themselves through the difficult period and were on track to get to lunch safely. However, in the last over of the session, Maharaj had Mehidy trapped leg in front of him, a decision that could not be reversed even with a review.

Short results: Bangladesh 60/6 (Mahmudul Hasan 16*; Wiaan Mulder 3-22, Kagiso Rabada 2-16) vs South Africa.
