Hoda Kotb gets emotional and wipes away tears as Jenna Fischer shares her breast cancer story on “Today.”

Hoda Kotb was moved to tears as she conducted the interview Jenna Fischer less than two weeks after Office alum revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

During the interview, in which the 50-year-old actress spoke about her experience with cancer for the first time since announcing her diagnosis, the 60-year-old journalist became clearly emotional.

“After my operation – I’m recovering, as you know – I looked into it Today Show,” Jenna told Hoda on the Monday, October 21, episode Today. “I got out of bed and sat on the bench at the end of my bed with a cup of coffee and my big old pillow and I watched you and savannah (Guthrie) And Jenna (Bush Hager) and all the guys.”

“And you kept me company,” Jenna continued. “And I thought, 'If I ever get the chance to tell this story, I want to talk to you, because I know there's a woman right now sitting with her pillow on a bench at the end of her bed, wondering, 'What's coming.' next for me?'”

As Jenna told the touching story, Hoda – who underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer in March 2007 before being declared cancer-free – appeared to wipe a tear from her eye.

During the interview, Jenna explained that she went in for her routine mammogram appointment in October 2023.

“Three weeks later,” she said, “they said, ‘Oh, your mammogram was fine. There were a few places that were difficult to see. They have very dense tissue. We would recommend that you have another mammogram and perhaps a follow-up examination.' with a breast ultrasound scan.' I thought, 'This is the date that never ends!'”

At first, Jenna felt “no level of concern” when she went in for the breast ultrasound, she said. However, they then asked her to do a biopsy, saying there was a “10 percent chance” of it being cancer.

On October 8, Jenna celebrated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sharing with her followers that she was diagnosed with stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer in December 2023.

In her post, which included a photo of her with her new pixie hairstyle, she explained to her followers that she “had a lumpectomy to remove the tumor,” adding, “Luckily my cancer was caught early and he “Had not spread to my lymph.” However, due to the aggressive nature of triple-positive breast cancer, chemotherapy and radiation were still required to ensure it did not recur.”

After her interview with Hoda aired, Jenna thanked Hoda and the members of the organization Today show up for their support.

Alongside two photos with her and Hoda, Jenna wrote, “A big thank you to @hodakotb and everyone at the @todayshow for inviting me to talk about my journey with breast cancer. I hope it will be comforting for all women to hear my story.” I'm still going through this on this journey, but there are more good days than bad that I can use in some way.

She added: “And another reminder: get a mammogram and any follow-up tests recommended by your doctor. 99% of women diagnosed with early breast cancer survive it. Early detection is the reason my treatment was so successful.”
