The Commanders' Jayden Daniels was dealing with a rib injury “week to week.”

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is considered week-to-week after suffering a rib injury in the first quarter of the team's lopsided Week 7 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn announced the timeline during a news conference Monday, saying it is not a long-term issue and the team is confident Daniels can play in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears. It's a matchup between Daniels, the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, the player one spot ahead of Daniels at No. 1.

“We're going to take him through all the steps in training and assess how he's doing and keep working on it,” Quinn said. “We hope he can play, but we will also take all precautionary measures and implement them wisely for the player and the man.”

Quinn confirmed that Daniels was injured when he was turned over by a defender at the end of a 46-yard run in the first quarter. Daniels stayed in the game, hitting shots of seven and three yards, while Washington capped the drive with a 23-yard field goal from Austin Seibert. Daniels was examined on the sideline in the blue medical tent during the ensuing defensive series.

He reappeared when the Commanders regained possession of the ball after Carolina quarterback Andy Dalton's second interception. Daniels entered the field and attempted to practice shots before being abandoned in favor of substitute Marcus Mariota. Then the rookie walked towards the locker room. Daniels was initially announced as “questionable to return” but was ruled out at halftime as the Commanders led 27-0. At the start of the second half, he returned to the sideline without a uniform but with a smile on his face and waved to the crowd.

Daniels has been the talk of the league with his sensational performances and role in Washington's surprising start. The dual-threat enters Week 8 leading the league with a 75.6 completion percentage, 1,410 passing yards, six touchdown passes, 372 rush yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
