49ers WR Deebo Samuel was hospitalized with fluid in his lungs after the Chiefs' early loss

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has been hospitalized because of fluid in his lungs, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Monday afternoon.

It's unclear how long he will be sidelined or whether he will be able to play in Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Shanahan said Samuel first began dealing with the symptoms Sunday morning and that he had trouble breathing during the 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Samuel was taken out of the game in the second quarter and did not return. He was then taken to a local hospital that night.

Samuel has rushed for 335 yards and a touchdown on 20 catches this season, his sixth with the 49ers. He didn't make a catch and wasn't targeted in Sunday's game at Levi's Stadium. He was also seen on the sidelines wearing an oxygen mask during the competition and returned to the field in street clothes in the second half.

It was questionable whether he suffered from illness in the lead-up to the game, but details were not known.

Samuel's illness is the latest blow to the 49ers' offense this season. Fellow wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk also suffered a torn ACL and ACL in Sunday's loss and will undergo season-ending surgery in the near future. Aiyuk's knee bent awkwardly after he made a catch in the middle of the field and he had to be carried away just before halftime.

In addition to the two wide receivers, running back Christian McCaffrey also has yet to play this season as he is dealing with calf and Achilles tendon injuries. Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall made his debut Sunday after missing the first six games of the season because he was shot in the chest.

After Sunday's loss, the 49ers fell to 3-4 on the season. They will next host the Cowboys on Sunday night.
