A PS5 update that messed up game backgrounds was just a bug

An apparent error resulted in some people's PlayStation 5 dashboard having the backgrounds of game graphics replaced with promotional messages and news posts on Monday. The images they saw showed promotions for long-expired discounts and advertisements for new games.

People lamented the change on forums and social media, saying that the game graphics that previously appeared when highlighting a game were gone. Instead, the image, which would normally appear as a news post in a separate section of the PS5 UI, was displayed across the screen behind games such as PS5. In a now-deleted post, Daniel Hiatt, product lead for Game Hub and Activity Suggestions at PlayStation, wrote Monday afternoon that the change was a “(new) bug with an existing feature.” Then, at 6:00 p.m. ET, these gaming sites are back to normal, as we confirmed on our own PS5s. The @AskPlayStation account on X confirmed the fix and said:

A technical error with the “Official News” feature on the PS5 console has now been fixed. There have been no changes to the way game messages are displayed on PS5.

There are entire threads dedicated to the change on both Reddit and Resetera, but now that it's been reverted, people are left to discuss the PS5 Pro again, review the results and why Concord failed.
