Billy Crystal reveals how serious the talks are for “City Slickers 3” and what the film should be

The comedy western was released in 1991 City Slickers arrived and not only made a huge impact at the box office but also achieved Oscar fame. Billy Crystal starred in the film, which grossed over $179 million at the global box office but won his co-star (and Hollywood legend) Jack Palance an Oscar. Three years later the much-maligned City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold arrived with little fanfare, but time heals all wounds and the potential for City Slickers 3 is very alive.

Back in 2021, City Slickers Star Billy Crystal revealed that there had been discussions about a third film in the series, although his allusions to discussions about a sequel were broad and nothing has officially come from this time. “Yeah, I mean, I don't know how serious a talk is, but there's a little discussion about, what would it be for me, you know, that it should feel like it's not a sequel but a movie that could stand on its own.”

Crystal went on to remember the time he made the first one City Slickers In our interview, he recalls how much fun he had making the comedy.

“Many moments in City Slickers were really fun because it was so different again. Sitting on the horse and working with the cattle and of course it was exciting for me to play with Jack Palance because he was in the first movie I ever saw and um then to play with him that was great.”

Crystal isn't the only cast member out City Slickers He's eager to return to the franchise, and his co-star Daniel Stern previously told ComicBook that he'd be interested in returning as well.

“So, City Slickers I would realistically be more open to it because there's a whole different new story to be told of Billy and I and maybe (Jon) Lovitz, or whoever, coming back and having a late-life crisis as opposed to a mid-life crisis. Or I could see stories,” Stern said last year.

It is unclear when or if a City Slickers 3 could pull it off, but given the continued success of older sequels at the box office, there's potential that something unique can be done with the property.

Next up is Billy Crystal Before which premieres with two episodes on Apple TV+ on Friday, October 25th.
