Billy Crystal says City Slickers 3 could happen on one condition

Superstar Billy Crystal doesn't rule out the possibility City Slickers 3. However, that is When Harry met Sally The actor told ComicBook that this would only happen if the Western could be a standalone film and not a sequel.




While promoting his new Apple TV+ series Before, Crystal, who played Mitch Robbins in both games City Slickers (1991) and City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994), was asked about another film in the City Slickers Franchise.

The first City Slickers Received critical and audience acclaim and garnered Oscar-worthy attention. Crystal's co-star, Jack Palance won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Curly in the film. He famously did three one-armed push-ups during his acceptance speech at the 1992 Academy Awards. Palance also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.

Crystal was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and the film itself was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical at the 1992 Golden Globes.



There have been talks about a third film for years

ComicBook reported that, according to Crystal, there were already talks about a third film in the series in 2021. The actor said he had a wonderful time filming City Slickers.

“Many moments in City Slickers were really fun because once again it was so different. “Being on the horse, working with the cattle and of course, you know, acting with Jack Palance was exciting for me because he was in the first movie I ever saw and um, acting with him “That was great,” Crystal said.

Last year, Crystal's City Slickers Co-star Daniel Stern (Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York)He said he would like to return to the franchise. “So, City Slickers would realistically be more open to it because there's a whole other new story to tell about Billy and me and (Jon) Lovitz (who played Glen Robbins City Slickers 2) maybe, or whoever comes back and has a late-life crisis, as opposed to a mid-life crisis. Or I could see stories,” Stern said last year.

In the first film, Crystal's character is forced to go on a cattle drive in the Southwest with his two friends while struggling with the thought of turning 40.

The future of City Slickers 3 is unknown, But the first film was a huge success, grossing $179 million at the global box office against a budget of $27 million. However, the sequel did not prove to be as successful with critics and audiences, grossing $72 million worldwide.

CBR was recently named City Slickers as one of the 10 best western comedies. Bruno Kirby, Patricia Wettig and Helen Slater also starred. The film was written by Lowell Gantz and Babaloo Mandel and directed by Ron Underwood.


Crystal's latest project, Before, Premieres October 25, 2024 on Apple TV+ with two episodes. In it, Crystal plays a child psychiatrist named Eli Adler who lost his wife to suicide. There he meets a troubled boy who has a connection to his past.
