Tyrese Maxey is ready to lead the Sixers despite the absence of two star leaders

CAMDEN, NJ – The Philadelphia 76ers have arguably the most talented Big 3 in the league, led by Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey. However, at the start of the season, Embiid and George will have to sit out as they recover from their ailments.

That means Maxey will have to take the lead in this group, just as he did during the two months Embiid was out of the 2023-24 season with a meniscus injury in his left knee. The Sixers had their problems with the big guy down as Maxey got used to being No. 1 on the opposing team's scouting reports, but as he approaches this situation, he's ready to take the lead , having learned from previous experiences.

“I learned a lot,” Maxey said. “I've said several times, obviously you don't like seeing him go down last year, but I think it really helped me develop my game mentally. “I've seen a lot of different coverage. Teams tried to do a lot of different things, tried to cash in on my success and die. So I had to find ways around that – get my teammates involved, outplay some with the ball and do different things to help my team win.”

Maxey knows what it's like to lead the Sixers despite previous injuries. This isn't an ideal situation, of course, but until Embiid and George are back on the floor, Maxey will have even more work to do to ensure Philadelphia thrives without its two key pieces.

“It’s life,” Maxey added. “Everyone goes through things, every team goes through things. We know that will change once the games come, just because of the situation or whatever, but hey, guys have to step up. Guys still have to go out and compete.” For the last week and a half or however long it's been since P has been out, guys have been going out and competing. You just prepare for every situation.

Maxey will lead the Sixers into a tough season-opening matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks at home on Wednesday. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT at the Wells Fargo Center.
