Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladesh player to score 6000 Test runs in the first Test against South Africa. Which batters will be the first to reach this mark for their respective countries?

Mushfiqur crossed the 6,000-run mark late on the second day of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa in Mirpur when he hit left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj for four in the 26th over of Bangladesh's second innings.

He was the first Bangladeshi player to score 6000 runs in Test cricket. Tamim Iqbal is the only other one with over 5,000 runs and a tally of 5,134 runs. Mushfiqur is also one of only three Bangladesh batsmen with over 6,000 runs in ODI cricket, alongside Tamim and Shakib Al Hasan.

But who was the first to reach the 6,000-run mark for any Test-playing nation?

England: Wally Hammond

The first ever player to score 6,000 Test runs was the English player Wally Hammondwhich crossed the mark in December 1938, nine months before Test cricket came to a standstill due to the Second World War. As captain of his team, he scored 24 and 58 goals against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Australia: Don Bradman

It's rare to find a hit list without one Don Bradman on it, and that is no different. 'The Don' became Australia's first batsman to score 6,000 Test runs when he passed the mark in January 1948, scoring 132 and 127* against India in Melbourne. Unsurprisingly, he is still the fastest ever to reach 6,000 Test runs, in just 68 innings.

West Indies: Garfield Sobers

20 years after Bradman and 30 after Hammond, Garfield Sobers became the first West Indies player to reach the 6,000 Test runs mark. With 152 and 95* to his name against England in Guyana, he narrowly missed out on Bradman's success of scoring two centuries in that game. Just five years later, Rohan Kanhai Sobers joined this club.

India: Sunil Gavaskar

Perhaps India's first truly great Test batsman, Sunil Gavaskarbecame the country's first batsman to score 6,000 Test runs, doing so in Adelaide in January 1981, with 23 and 5 against Australia. Two years later, Gundappa Viswanath joined him, although Viswanath debuted in Test cricket two years earlier than Gavaskar.

Pakistan: Javed Miandad

Javed Miandad etched himself in Pakistan cricket history as the first to score 6,000 runs when he scored a mammoth 260 runs against England at the Oval in 1987. Pakistan scored 708 in that innings and managed to force a forecourt but could only draw the game.

Sri Lanka: Aravinda de Silva

A small but tough dough, Aravinda de Silva In Test cricket, he almost made it to the 6,000-run mark when he scored 88 against England at Lord's in May 2002. Barely two months later, he played his last Test and scored a double century in his final innings.

South Africa: Gary Kirsten

South Africa has been a Test country since the 19th century, but the ban on international cricket in the second half of the 20th century means the best batters have only come since 1992. Prelude Gary Kirsten became the first to score 6,000 runs for the Proteas in November 2002, with a half-century against Sri Lanka in Johannesburg.

New Zealand: Stephen Fleming

The last player before Mushfiqur to become the first to reach his country's 6,000 mark was New Zealand Stephen Flemingwho achieved this in a 65-run win over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in August 2005. He has since been joined by Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson at the 6,000-strong club.
