Lionel Messi's first MLS playoff game could become the most-watched game in Apple TV history.

Messi and Inter Miami host Atlanta United on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to begin their best-of-three first-round series in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The storylines for this game are exciting: Atlanta is just one of four teams to beat Inter Miami this season, playing them to a 2-2 draw last month. Inter Miami coach Tata Martino is aiming for his second MLS Cup title after helping Atlanta win in their inaugural season in 2018.

And of course there is Messi. The Argentine World Cup winner is an MLS MVP favorite and the biggest draw in the sport.

“Lionel Messi wants to turn your heads and he has his friends with him to do it,” Apple TV's Taylor Twellman said during a press conference on Wednesday. “I think Atlanta is struggling with that. (Interim coach) Rob Valentino knows that, and I think Miami is expecting to host the MLS Cup on December 7th.”

The game will be available for free on Apple TV via the MLS Season Pass.

It will air on Apple.com, in Times Square in New York City and in Apple Stores around the world, the company announced.

TikTok will also have a Messi camera during the playoff game, exclusively on the Inter Miami star, from the MLS and Inter Miami accounts.

“We will make this game the most widely distributed game in MLS Season Pass history and bring it to as many fans as possible around the world,” said Emeka Ofodile, Apple Global Head of Sports Marketing.

Inter Miami heads into the playoffs as MLS Supporters' Shield champions. They achieved the best record in MLS history with 74 points from 22 wins, eight draws and four defeats. Messi and Luis Suarez also became the first teammates in MLS history to each score 20 goals in a season.

Atlanta United playoff preview

Atlanta mounted a late comeback, winning 2-2 (5-4 on penalties) away from home against CF Montreal in Tuesday's Eastern Conference wild-card game with a shot over Messi and Inter Miami.

Atlanta United moved up to No. 9 in the seeding list with wins in its last two games and a 3-0 loss to DC United on decision day. The club has six wins, six draws and six losses since Rob Valentino was appointed interim coach in June.

“When a team gets hot at the end of the year, they can do anything. And this Atlanta United team is going to fly,” Zivin said. “They finished in 12th place entering Decision Day. And now, boom, they meet Messi. I think it's an extremely compelling matchup. I can’t wait for Friday night.”
