'Joker 2' Director Talks About Returning for a Lady Gaga-Harley Quinn Movie – Comic Book Movies and Superhero Movie News

When asked at the film's Hollywood premiere about a possible spin-off starring Gaga's character “Lee,” Phillips replied: “I've always believed that these two films exist as independent films, so to speak.” And no. I know you're trying to get to the next thing, but I don't want to get into that.” This suggests that Phillips sees the Joker sequel as a self-contained story and there are currently no plans to expand Lee's narrative .

In an interview with Variety in August 2024, Phillips also explained that he designed Lady Gaga's portrayal of Harley Quinn to fit into the specific world of Joker. He deliberately removed the exaggerated features of earlier versions.

“The high-pitched voice, that accent, the gum-chewing and all that sassy stuff that's in the comics, we left that out,” Phillips said. “We wanted it to fit into the world of Gotham that we created from the first film,” he continued.

Joker: Folie à Deux, a 2024 psychological thriller and sequel to Joker (2019), follows Arthur Fleck as he develops a relationship with fellow inmate Lee Quinzel at Arkham State Hospital. The film explores her descent into madness, with Arthur's followers starting a movement to free him. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel. The cast also includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Zazie Beetz.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on October 4, 2024
