A fifth Tesla Cybertruck recall in a year, the latest due to the reversing indicator

WASHINGTON – Tesla is recalling more than 27,000 Cybertrucks because the backup camera image may not activate immediately after shifting into reverse. This is the fifth recall for the vehicle since it went on sale late last year.

Tesla has released a free software upgrade to fix the issue and owner notification letters are expected to be sent out on November 25th.

Cybertruck owners have had to deal with a number of recalls since the vehicle went on sale in November. There was a recall in June to address problems with trim parts that can come loose and windshield wipers that can fail. Two months earlier, some Cybertrucks were recalled because the accelerator pedal could stick.

As part of the latest recall, the company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the displays in the trucks could remain blank for up to eight seconds after a driver shifted into reverse. In the US, these screens are required to activate the rear view within 2 seconds of shifting into reverse.

Elon Musk's Tesla delivered the first dozen of its futuristic Cybertruck pickups to customers in November, two years behind original schedule.
