A profound DC Comics villain makes a brief appearance in the Arkham scenes of Episode 4 of The Penguin

Episode 4 of The Penguin takes us to Arkham with a full flashback dedicated to Sofia Falcone and features some familiar comic characters along the way. One of the inmates Sofia meets behind bars is the lively Magpie, who ends up being her cellmate.

We first meet Magpie when Sofia arrives in Arkham, as she tells her through the wall watching her on TV. “My name is Magpie like the bird,” she says, giggling through the shared vent. A little later she also shows up and takes the Arkham drops, which we now know gave Sofia the idea for her business venture, but her final scene is the scariest.

When Sofia is held in Arkham, she returns to the mess hall where Magpie is chirping. “I can show you the garden,” she says. “There are no plants though, it’s more of a garden. I'm always looking for birds.” However, when Magpie tells Sofia that she can finally get the medication, the Falcone daughter freaks out. Convinced that she was spying on her, she smashes her head in and lets her bleed to death.

Although she doesn't last long, Magpie actually has some connections to comic books. Margaret Pie, also known as Magpie, made her first appearance in 1986's The Man of Steel #3. She is a jewel thief whose favorite item is jewels named after birds. However, as a Batman supervillain, there is of course a twist as she replaces them with booby-trapped replicas.

In her origin story, she worked as a museum curator, where she lost her mind with all the beautiful objects she coveted. She has also been linked to a few other main characters over the years, as she was Poison Ivy's cellmate in Arkham for a time and later worked for the Penguin.

This isn't the first time we've seen her in live-action either, as she's previously appeared in both Gotham and the Arrowverse series Batwoman.
