A train driver was killed and up to 20 passengers were injured in a freak accident when a tree fell on a locomotive in New Jersey

A train driver was killed and at least 20 passengers were injured when the train collided with a tree on the tracks in New Jersey early Monday, officials said.

The accident happened around 6 a.m. in Mansfield Township on the New Jersey River Line light rail route near US 130, WPVI-TV reported.

According to initial reports from WPVI-TV, a tree fell on the train as it crossed the tracks, injuring six passengers.

However, NBC Philadelphia later reported that up to 20 passengers – nearly half of the 45 on board – suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Governor Phil Murphy confirmed on

“An investigation is underway. Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident,” the governor said.

Video from Chopper 6 shows a large piece of tree trapped under the front of the train and pinned to the tracks.

Emergency services were also on site and helped those injured in the collision.

According to NBC Philadelphia, the New Jersey Transit River Line between Roebling and Bordentown is closed in both directions.

An investigation is underway, officials said.
