CLEVELAND – The Guardians were in control of Game 3 of the American League Championship Series until the New York Yankees hit back-to-back home runs off closer Emmanuel Clase in the eighth inning.

The home runs turned a 3-1 Cleveland lead into a 4-3 New York lead. That sequence put the Yankees in the driver's seat, securing a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Clase gave up the first home run to Aaron Judge, whose 356-foot, two-run shot to right field tied the score at 3-3.

Then Clase surrendered a 390-foot solo home run to Giancarlo Stanton. Clase threw a 99.2 mph cutter on Judge's home run and an 89.5 mph slider on Stanton's home run.

Judge was the first batter Clase faced. Clase relieved Hunter Gaddis with two outs. Gaddis had accompanied Juan Soto, who scored on a home run by Judge.

The Guardians had not allowed consecutive home runs in a playoff game since October 5, 2018, when the Houston Astros did so against Corey Kluber in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

Clase has allowed six earned runs this postseason after allowing just five earned runs in the 2024 regular season. Clase also gave up a three-run home run to Kerry Carpenter when he hit a slider in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers.
