If you were paying attention Tuesday afternoon, you may have noticed the clatter of solid precipitation falling on nearby buildings.

You might think it was sleet or hail, and in some areas it might have been. However, most of the heavy precipitation that fell in Columbus on Tuesday was sleet, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

What does sleet mean?

According to NOAA, sleet forms when supercooled water droplets freeze on snow crystals, creating fragile solid pellets less than 0.2 inches in size.

According to NWS-Wilmington meteorologist Matthew Campbell, freezing temperatures were low over central Ohio on Tuesday and the atmosphere was unstable, allowing sleet to form.

Sleet is actually not particularly rare and occurs a few times each year, Campbell said.

What is sleet and hail?

Sleet, on the other hand, occurs when liquid rain freezes. Sleet's cousin, hail, must be at least 0.2 inches tall and consists of frozen water that accumulates around an embryo, which may be sleet or sleet.

Columbus recorded 0.1 inches of frozen precipitation Tuesday, a record amount for Oct. 15, according to NWS climate records. It wasn't just sleet; Sleet, hail and rain also fell from the sky on Tuesday.

All frozen precipitation, including sleet, is categorized as snow in NWS records, according to Campbell.

“Even if hail accumulated at the airport in July, for example, that would also be considered snow,” Campbell said.
