Game 3 was tough. Failed saves from the best closer of the regular season and the best closer of the postseason. Stunning defense. Massive, momentum-boosting home runs. Hope has been shattered, only to be restored. October baseball at its peak.

The Guardians

The Guardians erased another stunning blown save from star closer Emmanuel Clase in the eighth with two game-winning home runs from rookie Jhonkensy Noel and David Fry. The latter hit the walk-off winner in 10 innings to give Cleveland a 7-5 victory.

In a stat that shows how close they came to turning this series around, Cleveland put up heavy traffic against the Yankees in the ALCS, leaving 27 runners on base through three games. They left 11 runners in a Game 3 survival fight.

It was the third postseason walk-off home run in franchise history, joining Tony Peña (1995 ALDS) and Oscar Gonzalez (2022 AL Wild Card).

Noel was 1 for 15 in the postseason and didn't hit a home run in 76 at-bats before that iconic moment saved the Guardians' season.

Lost in the chaos was rookie Kyle Manzardo's first home run of the season, giving the Guardians their first lead of the series. It was the kickstarter for an instant classic.

Guardians players to watch

Emmanuel Clase's second blown save of the postseason is concerning. It's not that he blew two saves in the playoffs, but how it happened: He gained tremendous momentum in home runs. He needs to return to form if Cleveland wants to maintain the momentum.

Brayan Rocchio's hitting streak continues, with at least one hit in eight consecutive postseason games. Rocchio is batting .407 with one home run and two RBI. He owns an OPS of 1.041.

As indicated in the regular season, David Fry's clutch meter is way up. He hit two massive home runs and seven RBI in the postseason.

The Yankees

The Yankees became the first team in postseason history to go past multiple runs and hit back-to-back home runs when Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton both narrowly outscored Emmanuel Clase in what looked like a series highlight.

New York, despite its two wins with runners in scoring position, was atrocious in the ALCS, going just 3 of 25 (.120). They are 9-60 (.150) in the entire postseason. New York drew six walks in the series but was unable to fully capitalize on them.

After an incredible turnaround, how will the Bronx Bombers react after being hit with a historic backlash?

The expansion bracket suddenly shifts toward the Yankees, who were just one point away from taking a 3-0 lead in the ALCS. New York is seeking its first American League pennant since 2009.

Yankees players to watch

Aaron Judge hit his second home run in two games. However, those memories were significantly dampened when the Yankees failed to secure the win. The leading candidate for AL MVP started the postseason 2-15 in the first five games.

Giancarlo Stanton was second in a one-two punch that nearly put Cleveland on life support. He has three home runs and six RBI this postseason. Stanton hit 27 home runs and 72 RBI in the regular season.

Anthony Volpe posts a .483 on-base percentage. He scored at least one goal in five of seven postseason games.

Today's pitching matchup

(NY) Luis Gil (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. (CLE) Gavin Williams (0-0, 0.00)

Luis Gil kicks off an energetic crowd at Progressive Field. Gil, a rookie, went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA and recorded 130 strikeouts in the regular season. He's a prime candidate for AL rookie of the year. It is his first start of the season. Gil was challenged by the Guardians in one matchup this season, allowing three runs, six walks and three hits, including a home run off Brayan Rocchio. Gil has 17 starts with one or zero runs allowed.

Yankees stud relievers Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver pitched in all seven games. Weaver leaves the walk-off to Fry.

Gavin Williams, who has a regular season record of 3-10 with a 4.86 ERA, is an unknown. He hasn't played a game since September 22nd. It is also his postseason debut. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt might throw him in the water for a few innings before picking him for the best bullpen in baseball.

Reliever Cade Smith threw just 10 pitches in Game 3, shutting out Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in that order. Expect Hunter Gaddis and Tim Herrin to be back in action to bring further redemption for Clase.

Who are the announcers for Game 4 of Guardians vs. Yankees?

Here's part of a story about David Fry's walk-off winner from cleveland.com. The Guardians beat author Joe Noga.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Guardians had just celebrated an unexpected Christmas in October, so it was only fitting that they got to experience Friday on a Thursday.

David Fry, responsible for so many game-winning hits and comeback moments for Cleveland during the regular season and playoffs, delivered a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Guardians a 7-5 lead -Victory against the Yankees in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Progressive Field.

It was the third postseason walk-off home run in Guardians history, joining Tony Peña in Game 1 of the 1995 AL Division Series against Boston and Oscar Gonzalez in the deciding game of the 2022 AL Wild Card Series against Tampa Bay.

Fry's home run came one inning after rookie right fielder Jhonkensy Noel hit a two-out, two-run home run of his own to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth and force extra innings. Fantastic defense from Andrés Giménez and Josh Naylor in the top of the 10th kept the score stagnant at 5 runs each.

Bo Naylor opened the inning with a leadoff single to right against former Yankees closer Clay Holmes. He moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Brayan Rocchio and took third after Steven Kwan sent a grounder back to the mound and Holmes inexplicably threw to first base for the second out.

Holmes then trailed Fry 1-2 before throwing a 96 mph sinker into the strike zone and over the inside of the plate to the Guardians All-Star. Fry, who came into the game as a pinch-hitter for Kyle Manzardo in the seventh inning, said he “fainted” after getting a hit on the pitch.

“I just told God, 'Hey, man, take this.' “It's a tough fight…you take the attack,” Fry said. “In situations like that it’s hard to keep your wits about you and just try to act normally, but luckily tonight was a good night.”
